I was asked, “What duty does a man have to his parents after he’s married? How can he honor his parents without neglecting his wife?”

I’ve been thinking a lot about this question, both in relationship to my now elderly parents, and to my children, eight of whom are now adults.

Here’s my first stab at an answer:

A son can honor his parents after marriage in many ways, but always within the proper order of priorities—his wife and children come first. That being said, here are some ways he can uphold the Fourth Commandment while maintaining his primary duty to his own household:

Regular visits and communication show that he values and respects them, even though he no longer lives under their authority. This doesn’t mean daily check-ins like a teenager giving an account of his whereabouts, but it does mean he doesn’t vanish like a hermit the moment he gets married. Calling to check on them, visiting on Sundays or feast days, and ensuring they feel included in family life (within reason) helps maintain a strong relationship.
Praying for them is one of the highest forms of honor. A son should offer Mass intentions for them, pray the Rosary for their well-being, and, if they are struggling in faith or suffering in any way, he should offer sacrifices for their spiritual and physical needs. Honor is not just about external gestures but about willing their ultimate good.
Providing for them in their old age is both a duty

A Covenant of Love

Posted on October 18, 2023October 23, 2023 by Jeff Cassman
I wrote this prayer for husbands and wives to say together each night. Please offer your suggestions for improving it. Be gentle.
In the quiet of this night, we come together, O Lord, united in holy matrimony, and in awe of Your infinite love and mercy. We bow our heads and lift our hearts, offering You the day’s joys, works, and struggles. We thank You for the grace that sustains our union, a testament of Your divine love.
Lord Jesus, we humbly ask for the grace to grow in holiness each day. May our hearts be ever turned towards You, seeking Your will in every moment. Grant us a love for one another that reflects Your own unending love, a love that is patient, kind, and forgiving. Bestow upon us the strength to bear wrongs patiently, and the wisdom to understand and forgive as You forgive us.
We implore the special intercession of Saint Joseph, a model of unwavering faith and humble service. May his righteous spirit guide our actions, fostering a home of virtue, respect, and loving kindness. Under his watchful eye, may we labor diligently and rest peacefully, entrusting our earthly cares to his holy intercession.
We seek the tender embrace of our Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our mother. May her immaculate heart be our refuge and her virtues our path. In her grace, may we find the courage to sacrifice, to give without counting the cost, and to love without measure.
Together, hand in
