How Late Is “Too Late” When You’re Late for Mass?

Posted on December 8, 2022 by Jeff Cassman
Someone asked a question about ‘how late is too late to arrive at Mass and still receive communion’.

There is no law governing this, but there are theologians who have given direction on this and related questions. Father Herbert Jone is one. He was also a canonist. In “Moral Theology” he wrote:

“In order that the grave obligation of hearing Mass on Sundays
and Holydays be fulfilled certain conditions are required on the
part of the Mass and on the part of the attendants. – One may be
excused from assisting at Mass for a proportionately good reason.

I. On the part of the Mass of obligation the following
is required:

1. It must be a complete Mass, i.e., assistance at it
must extend from the beginning of the Mass to the
last blessing.

A venial sin is committed by voluntarily omitting an unimportant
part of the Mass, e.g., from the beginning of the Mass to the
Offertory exclusive, or the part that follows the Communion, or
even the part which precedes the Epistle together with that which
follows the Comm union.

A mortal sin is committed by missing an important part voluntarily,
e.g., that which precedes the Gospel together with what
follows Holy Communion, the part extending from the beginning
of the Mass to the Offertory inclusive, the part of the Canon that
precedes the Consecration, or the part between the Consecration
and the “Pater Noster,” or the Consecration alone; but probably
not the Communion alone. It is held

Our Sunday Morning Vehicle Debacle

Posted on February 19, 2021July 2, 2021 by bencassman

Our Sunday morning vehicle debacle caused us to split up for Mass times, with the RadTrads going to the SSPX and us obedient, non-rigid, non-schismatic, and non-heretical sons and daughters of Holy Mother Church going to the later diocesan TLM. Some of the children enjoyed the detour because they got to see some “acquaintances’ of the opposite sex.

May be an image of 2 people, people standing and outdoors… Read the rest

Biden’s Contradictory Pro-Choice Policies

Posted on January 18, 2021July 1, 2021 by bencassman
Biden will attend Mass this morning, receive Jesus Christ via communion and then use his executive power to expand the extermination of babies.
It’s a perfect diabolical inversion of what Catholic Coronations used to look like.
Thank you, Never Trumpers.

Merry Christmas!

Posted on December 25, 2020June 30, 2021 by bencassman
We drove through an actual blizzard in Brentwood, TN to get here. Five miles of near white-out conditions that ended as suddenly as it began.
The boys sang the propers well, too… Except maybe that ridiculous gradual; I’d like to talk with the monk who thought that was a good idea…
Merry Christmas.

La Misa en Espanol

Posted on January 27, 2020June 4, 2020 by Jeff Cassman

My circumstances yesterday were such that I attended a 4pm Spanish liturgy. #12M5 wanted to attend to “find out what a Spanish Mass is”, and once the Mass began he was looking in every direction, brow furrowed.

After several minutes he asked me, loudly, “Where are all these people from and why are they speaking Spanish?”. I quietly explained that most were from Mexico and that’s why they speak Spanish. He then said, just as loudly and right as the Church fell silent after the Epistle, “I think they should learn to speak English!”… Read the rest
