The phantom of yesterdays

Posted on June 13, 2023June 14, 2023 by Jeff Cassman

In the garden where lilies mourn their shade,
The woman weeps under the willow’s veil,
Her heart a tomb where once a cradle laid,
Her dreams like glass, now shattered and frail.

Beneath the twilight, the wind begins to wail,
Echoing her sorrow, her tragic tale,
A silent symphony, a wordless ballad,
Of a love born, too delicate to avail.

In her arms, the phantom of yesterdays,
In her eyes, a sun that’s lost its rays,
An empty cradle sways with the moonlight,
Her lullabies float on the night’s hushed ways.

She seeks her child in every dawn’s first light,
In the silent whispers of the starry night,
In the dewdrops clinging to a rose’s heart,
In the fleeting joy of a bird’s flight.

In autumn leaves, she finds her babe’s laughter,
In spring’s bloom, the dreams that came after,
But with every season’s passing stride,
Her hopes fade, her heart beats slower.

Still, she searches in the ocean’s tide,
In the mountain’s strength, in the river’s guide,
A mother’s love, undying, rides the despair,
Seeking solace where pain and loss reside.

Yet, in her heart, she holds a prayer,
That in the expanse of limbo’s sphere,
Her child plays in fields of eternal June,
Where love transcends, and there is no fear.

For in her heart, a truth so poignant,
That love transcends life’s every moment,
Her child lives in each breath she takes,
In every tear, every lament.

In despair’s clasp, the woman awakes,
Her heart may shatter, … Read the rest

A fortress of memories

Posted on June 10, 2023June 8, 2023 by Jeff Cassman

In the cloak of a thousand stars’ past,
There dwelled a boy, David, in roles so vast,
Once a humble shepherd, with psalms in the breeze,
In Bethlehem’s pastures, he sought his peace.

Sheep once his, in emerald fields they slept,
His heart with their memories, in silence wept,
Songs of truth, from his lips they once poured,
The poet of yore, as a king, by God adored.

Echoes of a whispered prophecy from night,
A tale of a crown, a king in hindsight,
As dawn touched the memory of days once bright,
David’s royal past was set alight.

His lyre, silent now, once sang a soothing tune,
Star of destiny dimmed, beneath the waning moon,
Among the ghosts of flocks, in the frost-kissed heath,
David, once a shepherd, mourned a lost wreath.

The vision of a city, once vibrant and strong,
A fortress of memories, where now does it belong?
Jerusalem, the jewel of a past overthrown,
The throne where he’d once, alone, shone.

A Philistine giant, he had felled to the ground,
With a shepherd’s faith, a victory profound,
Not by might, not by power, but by spirit divine,
In the vale of Elah, David’s regret now enshrined.

A crown once his, through trials untold,
In caves and deserts, a king’s tale bold,
With every sorrow, every beat of his heart,
David felt his kingly part depart.

David, the shepherd, gazed into the night,
Where stars retold his story, in their solemn light,
A king he’d been, his … Read the rest

When stars wrote his future

Posted on June 9, 2023June 8, 2023 by Jeff Cassman

Beneath the light of a thousand stars,
A young lad named David, destined for afar,
A simple shepherd, his psalm on the air,
In Bethlehem’s fields, he cast a watchful stare.

Sheep in his care, in verdant pastures they lay,
His heart swelled with melodies, he let them play,
From his lips spilled songs, truths intertwined,
A poet at heart, in him, a king, God divined.

In the silence of the night, a whisper came,
A prophecy of greatness, a king in name,
Before the dawn, in the glow of the morn,
A royal destiny for David was sworn.

His lyre strummed soft, his voice so soothing,
The star of destiny, in his spirit moving,
Among the flocks, amidst the dew-kissed heath,
David, the shepherd, wore a hidden wreath.

In a vision of a city, strong and bright,
A fortress to endure through darkest night,
Jerusalem, the future’s precious stone,
The destined throne where he’d stand alone.

The Philistine giant, he would bring to his knees,
With a shepherd’s sling, and faith as his keys,
Not by might, not by power, but by spirit divine,
In the valley of Elah, David’s courage would shine.

A crown awaits, but first, trials untold,
Through caves and deserts, the story will unfold,
With every stride, every beat of his heart,
David drew closer to his kingly part.

Young David, the shepherd, gazed into the night,
Where stars wrote his future, in their holy light,
A king he’d become, his reign would prosper,
An … Read the rest

A heart of ice, a promise withered

Posted on June 9, 2023June 8, 2023 by Jeff Cassman

Once in a realm where hearts were tender,
There dwelt a man of valor and splendor.
A noble soul, full of truth and light,
A star burning fiercely in the endless night.

In his world, emerged a damsel, seemingly kind,
Her beauty beguiling, her charm intertwined.
Her voice was a melody, her smile so sweet,
A nectarous deception, a tantalizing deceit.

Beneath her lashes of silken noir,
Lurked shadows of sorrow, echoes of a war.
Yet, he saw only the glow of her visage,
Entranced, he pledged his heart, his courage.

She wore his love like a precious gem,
Tucked in her bosom, a priceless emblem.
A promise whispered under the moon’s soft light,
In the realm of dreams, a knight’s delight.

Oh, how he loved her, as the sea loves the shore,
In her he found a world worth dying for.
His heart, he surrendered, his faith he sowed,
Unaware of the treacherous road.

Yet, behind the façade, a serpent slithered,
A heart of ice, a promise withered.
With a glacial kiss, she bore the dagger,
His heart the canvas, she the ruthless stagger.

With each pulsating throb, a crimson tear,
An elegy of love, drowning in fear.
Betrayal robed in an angel’s guise,
A cruel raven beneath the dove’s disguise.

She stomped upon his heart, once bold and free,
An echoed laugh in the hollow sea.
She left him shattered, bereft of his sun,
A hero undone, his ballad unsung.

In the silence of the night, beneath the … Read the rest

She had soup in a pot, and a bed soft and warm

Posted on June 8, 2023June 8, 2023 by ChatGPT

In a faraway town at a bar down the street,
Sat a man named Fred, on his usual seat.
He tipped back his pint, a fine foamy ale,
His cheeks rosy-red, his spirit hearty and hale.

He laughed with his friends, with tales they regaled,
Of mighty adventures, of storms they’d sailed.
The hour was late, the moon shone bright,
Yet Fred felt feisty, full of frothy delight.

“Oh no, not yet, I won’t go home,
I’m not ready to leave this joyful dome.
The world outside can wait its turn,
I’ve beer in my belly, and cheer to burn.”

His wife was waiting, in slippers and robe,
With a warm fire crackling in a cozy globe.
She had soup in a pot, and a bed soft and warm,
But Fred wanted none, he dismissed the norm.

“I shan’t head home, won’t leave this spot,
I enjoy it here, I like it a lot!
There’s laughter and songs, and friends oh so dear,
I can’t imagine a place without beer.”

His friends they nodded, they knew his plight,
Who’d want to leave on such a night?
Yet home beckoned, as it always does,
With its peace and quiet, its familiar buzz.

But Fred was stubborn, he shook his head,
“No, not now, not till I’ve fled
From the last round of jokes, the final cheer,
In this humble pub, with my cold, crisp beer.”

So let it be known far and wide,
About Fred, the man, with his beer-filled ride.… Read the rest
